The Iconic Characters of 'Sailor Moon'
Sailor Moon: A Cultural Phenomenon
From its original manga series that debuted in the early 90s to its popularized anime series beginning in the mid-90s, the magical girl fantasy-adventure series Sailor Moon remains an iconic classic. It follows the adventures of Usagi Tsukino, a teenage schoolgirl who discovers she is the reincarnation of a princess from a silver Millennium and is tasked with protecting the Earth from the Dark Kingdom, an organization of various monsters and villains. Along with her fellow Sailor Guardians, she uses the power of the Moon Princess to defeat her enemies and bring peace to the planet.
A Marine of Soldiers
The cornerstone of Sailor Moon is its unforgettable cast of characters. In order to protect the Earth, Usagi is joined by a group of extraordinary girls called the Sailor Guardians - usually referred to as the Sailor Soldiers or Sailor Scouts - each named after the planet they represent. They come together to form the most iconic lineup in magical girl anime:
Sailor Moon – The leader of the Sailor Guardians, Sailor Moon is the reincarnation of the Moon Princess. She is both kind and courageous and capable of summoning the Silver Crystal of the planet to use its power to transform into the Moon Princess.
Sailor Mercury – The brains of the group, Sailor Mercury Shutturun is the Guardian of Water and is the most disciplined of the group, using both her smarts and her knowledge of science to help the Guardians defeat their enemies.
Sailor Mars – The warrior of the group, Sailor Mars Hino Rei is the Guardian of Fire and is known for her strength and formidable martial arts skills.
Sailor Jupiter – The strong-minded Guardian of Thunder, Sailor Jupiter Kino Makoto is resourceful and fearless in battle and is the most experienced in hand-to-hand combat amongst the guardians.
Sailor Venus – The first sailor guardian discovered by Usagi, Sailor Venus Aino Minako is the leader of the Sailor Guardians and is the most experienced in combat amongst the Guardians. Her loyalty to Usagi makes her an invaluable member of the team.
Other Characters
In addition to the Sailor Guardians, Sailor Moon features a wide range of supporting characters, each integral to the story. Amongst these are the Outer Guardians, the sword-wielding angelic warriors who protect the inner sailor guardians in the depths of space. And, of course, the villains of the Dark Kingdom, led by Queen Beryl and her right-hand man Zoisite, whose plots to enslave the Earth the Sailor Guardians must thwart.
A Cultural Icon
It's no wonder Sailor Moon has become a cultural phenomenon. With its diverse cast of characters, its engaging plotlines, and its unique blend of fantasy and adventure, it has become one of the most beloved anime series of all time.
