Sandra Bullock: Beyond the Red Carpet
Before the Stardom
Before Sandra Bullock hit the red carpet, she was born in Arlington, Virginia, on July 26, 1964. She was raised by her German opera-singing mother and her American voice teacher father. At age 5, she moved to Nuremberg, Germany, before relocating to Austria where she finished high school. From an early age, Bullock wanted to become an actress, although her mother wanted her to focus on fashion design instead.
Early Career and Breakthrough
Bullock attended East Carolina University, where she studied drama. She moved to New York City to pursue a career in acting, and she made her television debut in the made-for-TV movie “Bionic Showdown: The Six Million Dollar Man and the Bionic Woman” (1989). She landed a steady flow of acting roles, most of them one-off guest appearances in series such as “Working Girl,” “Tales from the Crypt,” and “The Young American”.
Her big break arrived with the 1993 action movie “Demolition Man” opposite Sylvester Stallone. She also caught the attention of critics, who praised her performance in the 1994 romantic drama “Speed.” The movie became a box-office hit and made Bullock a star.

She has starred in films such as “Miss Congeniality” (2000), “Two Weeks Notice” (2002), “the Proposal” (2009), and “Gravity” (2013).
