The Journey of Cersei Lannister - A Character Analysis

A Study in Greed and Guilt

Cersei Lannister’s entrance into the Game of Thrones universe began with a rather bleak description. She was called “the only true Lannister” by her father, Tywin, due to her proud sense of loyalty, ambition, and unrivaled cunning. Though her traits are modeled after House Lannister’s, she wasn’t born into the family, as she is Jaime’s twin sister.

From Humble Beginnings to Success

Cersei proved to be an adept strategist as soon as she was given the opportunity to flex her muscles. She used her charm and charisma to win over her father and husband which allowed her to become an integral part of the Westerosi power structure. It was through her conniving and guile that she was able to climb the ladder of success to become the Queen Regent.

Love, Betrayal, and Power

Love was a major driving force in Cersei’s life. It was her love for her twin brother Jaime that pushed her to great heights and also lead her down a dark path. She betrayed her father, husband, and children when she and Jaime finally acted on their incestuous desires.

The Usurper and the Queen

After her husband, King Robert Baratheon, died, Cersei stumbled. In her pursuit of power, she made some questionable decisions which caused her to lose the confidence of her son Joffrey. It was through Joffrey that Cersei thought that she would regain the power that had eluded her for so long. To her dismay, Joffrey was unfit to rule and was usurped by the charismatic and determined Tyrell family. This was a major setback for Cersei as it meant that she no longer had a say in the decisions of the kingdom.

The Rise of an Undying Resolve

Cersei proved her resilience once again when the Tyrell's deposed her as queen. With her back against the wall, Cersei became an even more determined ruler with a goal of taking back her throne no matter the cost. She used various means including treason, revenge, and manipulation to maneuver her way to the top. Her journey is beset with various tragedies and losses, which served as a force in driving her to become the ruler she was born to be.

The Fall of an Undying Resolve

Though she was briefly successful in her attempts to become the Queen of Westeros, Cersei’s downfall came quickly. After a series of missteps and blunders, she was deposed once again. Now her fate is left uncertain as she waits for her ultimate punishment.
