How to Train Your Labrador

Training a Lab Step 1: Encourage Good Behavior

Labradors are notoriously intelligent dogs that are happy to learn new behaviors. To teach your Lab the behaviors you want, use positive reinforcement. This simply means rewarding them when they do something correctly, you can use treats, verbal praise, a toy, or lots of cuddles. By rewarding your Lab when they do the right thing, they'll quickly learn what behaviors you expect from them and which ones they should avoid.

Training a Lab Step 2: Establish a Routine

Labs do best when they have a regular routine to help them understand their boundaries. For example, start each day with a walk, playtime, and a meal. When your Lab knows what to expect each day, they will feel calmer and be better-behaved. An excellent way to establish a routine is to create a house rule chart that explains when they should expect dinner, potty times, playtime, and bedtime.

Training a Lab Step 3: Teach Basic Commands

All dogs should learn several basic commands, such as sit, stay, come, and heel. Start by teaching your Lab one command at a time using positive reinforcement. For example, when they sit, reward them with a treat and verbal praise. Each time they sit, practice the command until they understand it. Once they know one command, move on to the next one.

Training a Lab Step 4: Practice in Different Locations

Once your Lab understands a few basic commands, practice the commands in a variety of different locations, such as indoors, in the yard, and even in public places. This will help them understand that the commands aren't just for the home, but they should obey everywhere. During this step, it's also important to provide plenty of treats and praise when they obey.

Training a Lab Step 5: Be Patient and Consistent

Remember, each Lab is unique, so it might take them a while to learn new behaviors. You and your Lab will have good days and bad days, but it's important to stay patient and consistent with the training. With enough time and practice, your Lab will be following your commands in no time.
