Common Causes and Symptoms of Pneumonia
What is Pneumonia?
Pneumonia is a serious infection in one or both of the lungs caused by a bacteria, virus, or fungus. It can range from mild to life-threatening.
Common Causes of Pneumonia
Viruses, such as the flu or the common cold.
Bacteria, such as Streptococcus pneumoniae, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, and Chlamydia.
Fungi, such as Histoplasma.
Inhalation of a foreign object, such as water, chemicals, or food.
Common Symptoms of Pneumonia
It’s important to note that not all cases will present with the same symptoms.
Fever
Cough (often accompanied by mucus)
Shortness of breath
Confusion (particularly in the elderly)
Sharp chest pain that worsens when coughing
Fatigue
When to See a Doctor
If you experience any of the above symptoms, particularly if you feel short of breath or if a fever lasts longer than three days, you should contact your doctor immediately. Pneumonia is highly contagious and should be managed as quickly as possible.
