The Paladin, the Wizard, the Friend: Gandalf in LOTR
Gandalf's LoyaltyGandalf, the Hobbit equivalent of a wizard, first appears in The Lord of the Rings as a mysterious, wise figure, shrouded in secrecy. He is the first of the magical race of the Istari to appear in Middle-Earth, and works with the free peoples of Middle-Earth to combat evil and protect it from the forces of Sauron. His unwavering loyalty to his friends and companions, as well as his unashamed adherence to a higher power, makes him one of the most beloved characters in The Lord of the Rings.Although he has the power to use magic, Gandalf continually refuses to reveal his true name or his true identity, as part of his mission to protect the people of Middle-Earth from harm. This is why, throughout the course of the story, he is simply known as 'Gandalf', or 'Gandalf the Grey', as he is most often referred to by Frodo and the other Hobbits. His humility and commitment to his mission are inspiring, and speak to his great compassion for others.Gandalf is willing to risk his own life in order to protect those around him; even when all seems hopeless, he continues to have faith and fight for the free peoples of Middle-Earth. One of the most memorable moments in The Lord of the Rings is when he faces off against the Balrog in the Mines of Moria. During this confrontation, Gandalf takes what could be a suicidal stand against the Balrog, in order to protect his friends and ensure their safe passage.Gandalf is also shown to be a great friend. Throughout the story he encourages the Hobbits, comforts them in times of doubt, and cheers them on during battle. His kind words and playful banter are often the only source of light in the dark times that the people of Middle-Earth face. He is always there to lend an ear and offer advice, no matter the situation.In short, Gandalf is a loyal friend, mentor, and protector. His unwavering devotion to protecting and aiding those he loves, combined with his strong character and unashamed faith, make him one of the most powerful and beloved characters in The Lord of the Rings.
