The Life and Times of Harry Houdini

Thanks!

Early Life

Harry Houdini was born as 'Erich Weiss' on March 24th, 1874 in Budapest, Austria-Hungary. His mother, Cecilia Steiner Weiss, was a beloved figure in his life, while his father, Mayer Samuel Weiss, was a religiously devout rabbi who couldn't provide the family with sufficient finances. When Houdini was only four years old, his family moved to America. Throughout his childhood, Harry was able to develop his inherent strengths, such as dexterity, strength, and creative problem solving.

Start of Magic Career

Houdini began to take an interest in magic at an early age and began performing publicly as 'Ehrich, Prince of the Air' in 1891. Later in 1896 he changed his professional name to Harry Houdini based on French magician Jean Eugene Robert-Houdin. It was also in this year that Houdini was trained by a professional magician, Dr. Lynn. This training established a foundation of magic tricks he would use in his performances.

Break Through To Fame

By 1899, Houdini had become a major headliner in vaudeville and had perfected his signature trick of escaping from handcuffs. This was a massive sensation at the time and made Houdini a household name. Houdini continued to build on his act and took on dangerous and daring stunts which elevated him even further in fame.

Death

Houdini died from peritonitis in October 26, 1926. At the time of his death, Houdini was 52 years old and still performing in shows. After his death, his widow, Bess, and brother Hardeen dedicated their lives to keeping Harry's memory alive through shows, books and other promotions.

Legacy

Harry Houdini is remembered as one of the greatest and most famous magicians of all time. He was a master escapologist and astonished audiences with his dangerous and daring feats. Houdini also created several of the signature and innovative illusions today's magicians employ in their acts. His legacy continues to live on and will be remembered for years to come.
