Humble Beginnings
Before becoming one of Hollywood's most prolific directors, Steven Spielberg spent his early days in a New Jersey and Arizona. After winning an award for his first 8mm movie at the age of 13, he was driven to pursue his interest in filmmaking. He eventually gained acceptance into California State University Long Beach and shortly after, he got an internship at the editing department of Universal Studios.
Launching a Film Career
In 1974, Spielberg established a production company called Amblin Entertainment and his debut feature film was the cultural phenomenon Jaws. His follow-up project Close Encounters of The Third Kind (1977) cemented his reputation in Hollywood and earned him his first of many Oscar nominations.
Breakthrough Success
In 1981, Spielberg brought the world Raiders of The Lost Ark. This swashbuckling adventure flick became an instant hit and was nominated for 8 Oscars. Spielberg’s ET: The Extra-Terrestrial also became one of the highest-grossing films ever made.
Departing from the Mainstream
In 1993, Spielberg went against the grain of big-budget blockbusters with his Holocaust drama, Schindler’s List, which won him his first Best Director Oscar. He went on to create a string of acclaimed films and received his second Academy Award with Saving Private Ryan in 1998.
Continuing Legacy
Spielberg’s extraordinary career continues to this day. He has reimagined several beloved classics like War of The Worlds (2005), Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of The Crystal Skull (2008), and Ready Player One (2018). Never forgetting his humble roots, he is regularly involved with non-profit organizations that champion causes such as human rights, filmmaking education, and film preservation.
