Behind the Scenes of the Deadpool Film
The Creators
The creator behind Deadpool isn't one, but four! Writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, director Tim Miller and producer Lauren Shuler Donner worked together to bring the blockbuster to life.
At the helm was Miller, who had previously created debut feature-length film Neomam. Reese and Wernick--both veterans of the comedy world--brought a sharp script full of witty one-liners. Donner, creator of the X-Men films, provided an experienced eye and an understanding of the universe and characters.
Cultivating the Humor
Much of Deadpool's success is due to its zany, irreverant humor. But turning Deadpool into a well-rounded character with his own unique comedic take on life took careful curation.
The film features humorous asides to the fourth wall, countless puns, and cleverly incorporated pop culture references. With its edgy, adult-oriented humor, Deadpool pushed the boundaries of comic-book action movies.
Bringing the Character to Life
Finding the right actor to bring the merc with a mouth to life was the most important step in completing the movie--and once Ryan Reynolds was cast, the team was ready to start production.
Reynolds was no new-comer to the X-Men universe. He had played Deadpool's rival, Hannibal King, in the previous movie X-Men Origins: Wolverine. But his split personality, both lovable and arrogant, fit perfectly for the role. With his clever humor, quick wit and spot on comedic timing, Reynolds was the perfect choice to bring this new incarnation of a beloved character to life.
Behind the Scenes
Throughout the production, it was clear that the team had a common vision: to produce a spectacular film. It was a huge hit, breaking the world record for biggest opening weekend in February, with more than $264 million earned.
The team had to carefully choose which of Deadpool's classic comic book storylines to include in the film.
Reynolds gained muscle weight and worked extensively with a dialect coach to perfect the character's idiosyncratic voice.
CGI and special effects brought some of the more unique aspects of Deadpool's character to life, such as his signature red suit.
The soundtrack featured a mix of raw rock and cool jazz, to perfectly accentuate the action onscreen.
The result was a hype-worthy film experience that has been overwhelmingly successful both critically and financially.
