For many, the sound of the words "Pokemon" invokes a warm nostalgia of roaming through tall grass in search of your favorite pocket monster. With over 800 catchable Pokemon species, it's no wonder why it has consistently remained one of the most beloved franchises in video game history. But upon further inspection, what about the living, breathing creatures behind the pixels and polygons? What psychology, behavior, and emotion lies within the minds of these fascinating creatures?

The World of Pokemon

When living in the tall grass and mountainous regions, Pokemon must develop attributes in order to survive like any other living creature. Whether it be forming a pack formation with other species, journeying solo, or staying in the same area for thousands of years, there must be a greater reason behind their behaviors. Even more interesting is their habit of battling and evolving when exposed to certain stones, such as the Moon Stone, Fire Stone, and Thunder Stone.

The Minds of Pokemon

Common among the Pokemon collective is the ability to think and act independently while pursuing a desired outcome. Contrary to their reputation of being "stupid" and vulnerable to capture, many species demonstrate behavior that is quite advanced. From their ability to pick up on clues about the environment to forming strong bonds with human and fellow Pokemon companions -- Pokemon are often observed capable of the same emotions that humans experience.

Psychology in Training

When a Pokemon trainer embarks on their journey, they are usually accompanied by a single pocket monster. Along the way, they learn each other's strengths, weaknesses, likes, and dislikes. Though tireless battle often comes into play, trainers and Pokemon interact with each other without the need for dialogue - forming a friendship based off of mutual respect for one another. Through this relationship, trainers are able to discern each Pokemon's temperaments and how to employ their strengths in order to battle.

The Power of Empathy

The ability to communicate and respond to situations like emotional distress and physical danger is also a common occurrence with Pokemon. When a friend or a fellow Pokemon is in need, they often rally together to provide that much-needed support. In this way, Pokemon demonstrate an innate understanding of empathy - showing behavior that is similar to that of humans in the face of danger.

What can we learn from this? Pokemon are often underestimated due to the fact that they are, quite literally, pocket monsters; however upon further inspection, many possess the same qualities and characteristics as us humans. Whether it be empathy to companions or a desire to thrive, Pokemon demonstrate behavior that is far from "stupid". All these traits and more showcase the vast psychology of these fictional creatures.
